About

Building systems. Understanding how they work. Teaching what I learn.

I’m Vansh Mehta, a Backend Engineer at Jio Platforms in Mumbai, working across Java, Spring Boot, distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and event-driven architecture.

I spend my working days building backend systems that have to work under real constraints: quotas, queues, failures, replication, provisioning, and recovery.

And outside work, I’m doing something slightly different: I’m teaching Computer Science in public.

What I Do

As a Backend Engineer, I work on infrastructure and services that power cloud and AI workloads at Jio Platforms.

My work spans Java 17, Spring Boot, PostgreSQL, Oracle, Redis, RabbitMQ, REST APIs, Docker, Kubernetes, and asynchronous processing.

I’ve worked on systems for:

Quota validation → Order processing → Async workflows → Observability → Disaster recovery → Data synchronization

The interesting part isn’t just writing the code.

It’s understanding what happens when the system meets scale, concurrency, failure, and real-world constraints.

Why Computer Science?

Because frameworks change.

Languages evolve.

Tools come and go.

But the fundamentals stay.

Understanding memory, data structures, operating systems, networks, databases, concurrency, and distributed systems gives you a mental model that lasts far beyond a specific technology stack.

That’s what I’m interested in.

Not just how to use a tool. How the system behind it actually works.

Teaching Computer Science in Public

I’m currently building a fundamentals-first Computer Science course in public.

The approach is simple:

Start with the concept.
Understand it from first principles.
Solve problems that test the mental model.
Then build a system that puts the idea into code.

The course starts with Memory & Low-Level Programming and moves through linear data structures, hashing and trees, algorithms, graphs, software design, databases, networks, operating systems, security, distributed systems, computer architecture, discrete mathematics, theory of computation, compilers, and machine learning.

The goal isn’t to cover more topics. It’s to understand the connections between them.

A Little Beyond the Backend

Before backend engineering became my focus, I built Kavach, an Android SOS application using Java, XML, and Firebase.

It went on to win a Gold Medal at Anveshana 2023 and was shortlisted for the Government of India Tech Innovation Awards.

It was an early lesson in what I still enjoy today:

Take an idea. Build it. Test it in the real world. Learn from what breaks.

What I’m Curious About

How does it work underneath?

That question has taken me from writing code to understanding systems, and from learning Computer Science to teaching it.

There’s always another abstraction to peel back.

So I keep going one layer deeper.
